Alvarez, Go-Captain:
Discovered Shatol 600 years before the story of Shayol begins. He is now almost entirely Dromozootic (note contradiction). He gets a regular Dose of 6 cc. of supercondamine. [PS]

Attendant on Shayol-bull man called friend. he cut off the extra parts and gave supercondamine to the people on Shatol. He sounded the Galactic Alert when children were sent. He was contract to serve one kiloyear to redeem his family and freedom. He was rewarded by immediate return to Earth and 2 kiloyears pat by the instramentality, but he volunteered to finish taking care of the people [PS]
Dikkit (Turkish) = care, attention.

Condamine

Life Forms on Shayol. They settle into the body and grow extra parts of the body, causing great pain. They appear as flashes of light. they took care of the humans on Shayol: fed them, kept them alive, but it hurt. [PS]

Empire
A government established(?) or permitted(?) by the instamentality for 1,000 [more likly 2,000] years by the Fundamental Agreement. It was set aside at the time Shayol was cleaned up. Controllers of Earth.[GP] They were bribed (heh heh) by Raumsog (6oz of stroon to the presiding officer). Fought to kill when life and death were at stake. [GS] Knew about fighting. [AR] could kill without trial.[DB]

Committed a crime and was sent to Shayol; he had been on Shayol for 84y 7mo 3d 2h 11.5m when B'dikkit how long he had been there. He survived to marry the Dowager Lady Da.[PS]

"A Planet Named Shayol" (story)
Shayol is used as the Imperial (and other?) punishment planet; home of the dromozoa. The dromozoa enter humans and cause extra body parts to grow. These parts were harvested by B'Dikkit who then gave super-condamine to the prisoners. Shayol was finally cleaned up by the Instamentality. [PS]. original publication: Galaxy, October 1961. An Imperial institution. Screams of people on Shayol were broadcast as a warning throughout the Empire. [PS]

Stop-Captain

Powerful narcotic; like condamine but with an extra hydrogen molecule attached. it is deadly in three minutes unless the recipient has been exposed to the Dromozoa. It is forbidden to be mentioned. [PS]

Surgery Satellite
In orbit about Shatol; prepared people for the surface by skin toughening, nails, etc. Brainburning and eye rmoval optional.[PS]

Sudzal, Commander
Cruiser Commander with cubes and hypnotics. Had turtle-men for navigators. He answered the false aid call from Archosia. Sent cats back 2 million years to breed civilization and fight the Klopts; this was against the law. He was stripped of name, rank, life, and death-sent to Shayol. [CG] On Shayol he refused the super-condamine when he found out Shayol was finnished.[PS]
Sudzal is a city in the U.S.S.R. northwest of Moscow; it was ruled by Prince Alexander Nevsky.

Vom Acht, Doctor
Worked on the surgery satellite in orbit about Shayol; prepared criminals for transportation to Shayol. [PS]
