ooooooh it's an outline!
part1: setting up the space to an ambient soundtrack. setting up includes enclosing pipoung players with a cage, drawing a line on the ground surrounding the cage, and laying out train tracks on the periphery.
part2: quiet gamelan. pipoungs seated within cage and chang chang players carrying train around the tracks. train gradually force the crowd in towards the pipoungs (as if onto a train platform).
part3: gamelan plays the ups and downs, bursts of loud/silence. the audience is trapped between the chang changs and the pipoungs with nowhere to go.
part4: high intensity gamelan, flashing lights, chaotic motion, screaming, loud, you get the point.
part5: closure. mournful music, recorded music from the performers who can't be with us, other music? Possibly Mary May dancing a surreal version of Chiftitelli with a slow gamelan beat down at the end.
costumes: monochromatic neutral colored clothing. black face paint (should we think about another dark color? blue?) with an appliance over the nose, low mouth of white fangs, and high eyes painted on forehead. possibly latex gloves for creepy, sterile look...
what we need:
-for 3 pats of face paint, milk jugs for 8 teeth per person(katie can bring these), tape and latex for appliances.
-for train...big pieces of cardboard (# depending on how many changchangs we have - preferrably 4?), ducktape, silver spray paint, possibly dowel rods for texture. if anybody wants to add advertisement-esque signs to the train, go for it!
-for tracks (and line?)...a paint/marker/chalk that will glow on the floor, and a spongemop to create the lines.
-for cage...four poles and shrink wrap (Tim is trying to get this from work).
-strobe type light for part4.
-possibly filmstrip projector (Tim has this?) to project train images on the walls surrounding the space.
who we have:
definitely...Krispin, Austin, Tim, Katie
maybe...Damon, Diana, MaryMay, Victor, Conrad
who else?
[please add change correct modify if needed]

Mon, July 5, 2004 - 1:28 PMThanks for posting this
If there's anyone having any modifications to make - please make 'em now / before the next meeting, because for christ's holy sake I hate last minute change ups.
What's your thinking on the facepaint Katie? -

Re: TERMINUS
Tue, July 6, 2004 - 9:47 AMsorry for the confusion...i guess i just didn't want it to look like we were wearing blackface. but i assume you've done this before and know it won't. i trust you're judgment. -

Re: TERMINUS
Tue, July 6, 2004 - 10:08 AMBlackface is a very specific application. Its worn like a mask, from the hairline to the chin, and the lips are given an extra thick outline of red. usually this makeup is accompanied by a clownish costume.
I hate Political Correctness. Blackface doesn't own Black greasepaint. Its still (for the time being...albeit less so by degrees) a free country, and you can wear any color facepaint you want. Its not always about exploiting people or offending them. In performance art, its only about exploiting or offending the audience when called for, and decided apon by the artist(s). You can't acidentally wear Blackface. Let people think for themselves. that includes whether or not they are offended.
With all the elments of costumery and makeup discussed at last meeting, the performers will look nothing like actors in Blackface. -

Re: TERMINUS
Tue, July 6, 2004 - 10:13 AMcoincidentally; did you know that traditionally, Blackface is done with a cork which is lit on fire on one end, then exstinguished, mixed with a oil base or cream makeup, applied just before showtime, and removed immediatly after? -

Re: TERMINUS
Tue, July 6, 2004 - 11:32 AMthanks i know all this. i know it's not going to look like traditional blackface...i just didn't want any mistakes to be made. -

Wed, July 7, 2004 - 1:45 AMIf you want to be at the show on the 17th but don't want to / can't make a mask - let me know; I figure on making 3 of them - first come first serve; they'll be most likely the simplest version of the classic "minstrel-show" design that's on the table. Hambone practice Thursday at 8 at the Nomad/Obscura stead.

Zehmyan's notes
Fri, July 16, 2004 - 1:36 PMBreak a leg everyone (then gnaw it off and eat it) I apologize for my curmudgeony behavior as of late, stress and life issues...yadda yadda yadda. Everyone really came together in the end to ensure some great fabrication was finished on time. Thank you all so much. that aspect of performance means so much to me. A few notes:
Be careful with the apliances. they are sturdy, and will serve us a good long time, as long as they are treated with care. keep the parts from resting on one another for extended periods, as they will bond to one another and ruin themselves. take special care to do this after the show, removing them carefully, and storing them in seperate bags.
also treat the train cars gingerly. they are also very sturdy and can be repurposed for future shows, so lets get them home in one peice.
Could someone bring some Burlap for me Monday? I had no room to pack a monochrome outfit, and I'll be getting there directly from the airport. Tim: I'll call you from the Airport Monday night!
Have fun everyone! I'm so glad I'll be there for Monday night's show. This is what keeps me from being suicidal people. I'm not kidding when I say that you all make my life worthwhile. I love you guys. Kill em.
