Lokifreign Review 12-26-07

I used to have a great list of these but time marches on. I thought I'd share them with you; that way, there will be an archive to refer to on that internets, ther. Stars represent Loki's personal assessment / enjoyment level on the ridiculous hollywood "5 star" scale which actually is exactly the same a the "out of ten" scale; ratings are given based solely on the average body of a given artist's work that Loki has actually been exposed to. Most of this is learned via the internet from two main sources in particular:

SomaFM ( somafm.com/ ) has The Drone Zone and Doomed:

LISTEN NOW:
Drone Zone: somafm.com/play/dronezone

Doomed: somafm.com/play/doomed

It really makes me feel so much better about everything, so much more hopeful, that these two stations exist. It makes me feel more valuable as a person whenever I turn either of them on.

Some of this is from other Daffodil members and/or their sexual partners or friends of their sexual partners, too, though.

===Don't=== look to any of this stuff to keep you from snuffing it, btw, uncle'okee gets his auditory soothing from different ponds than most people are willing to fish in.

Andreas Ammer, Fm Einheit ***
Drone and german. Who doesn't love scary germans talking? When the english parts come in I'm all like "wtf?"

Amorphous Ossiferous *****
I don't *think* they have any albums in the retail market but I could be wrong about that. Transcendent, abstract, self-contained, dignified, unrestrained yet naturally reserved, nearly perfect.

Big Mouse *****
Drone, very dark, coldly emotional. Not much to say except they jam my button down *every* time. What is it about having a tortured soul that makes listening to carefully perfected soul-torture sounds so moving and beautiful?

Black Lung ***1/2
techno, with that techno beat, so look away if that will bother you. If you liked the Unacceptable Face of Freedom or Beating A Retreat (Test Dept.), you'll find this even darker and far more cynical and good&peppery with that "I'm going to dance around and point in your face" thing. "The More Confusion the More Profit" is a good track.

Black Tape for a Blue Girl ***1/2
When this ensemble came out in the 90s, I was too poor and too into other stuff to worry about it much. Not that I regret it per se. It is like the best of the Swans / Jarboe but with deeper musical ability and way, way, way better vocals. Way. Sad, sad.

Brighter Death Now*****
Aw YEAH. Yeahyeahyeah. Warning: most people that sample this, I think, will shrivel up and expire or simply never listen to me ever again about what music to listen to. It's distilled sonic heaviness, and musical *weight* isn't something I find other people enjoying as much as I do. I imagine the earthly Demi-Urge to be a creature of this kind of insane-yet-self-controlled heaviness; I think Brighter Death Now is a fucking perfect name for this sound.

the Chains ****1/2
They may have broken up by now; it's hard to understand the reports on that, because Mr. McPuke is so fucking prolific and engaged with various things you have to take whatever people say about him with a grain of salt. I've read a lot of books, though, and I know that no matter how jocular and clever Mr. McPuke is, he';s going to get devoured alive by invisible demons in front of children at some future date, so my suggestion is to figure out how to get your hands on some Chains. There are sixteen zillion other projects this fucker does, and I recommend you give respect to all of them (esp. Hobo Gobbelins), but the Chains deliver the best / fullest work I've heard from this club.

Die Form Sadist School ****
minimalism, sanity-stretcher (side project of Die Form)

Mijael Gutierrez ***1/2
Ceremony drone, synth and vocals. Reminds me of this one italian guy who's name I totally forget - I bet CAlanna remembers. Anybody seen her any time recently?

Fear Factory ***
you probably knew about them, but I didn't. Sisters of Mercy only put out so much stuff - what if you need to listen to a whole lot more of some guy singing kind of awkwardly in a quavering baritone? Fear Factory even represents a kind of tolerable evolution of the NIN work as well. Like Christian Death they seem to like to put a 3xlength surreal drone in with every third or fourth "pop" tune.

Headscan ***
since Brian Eno has already put out everything they make 30 years ago, I'd suggest buying Eno albums instead of fishing for hints of originality in Headscan. However, when they come on the radio, I look up and think, "are they playing Eno drones, now?" but it turns out to be either these folks or those other people. Might as well have them.

the Hybryds ****
scary bombast, like Hunting Lodge. It makes me think of you.

Kahrayzee ****
total somnolence. "Drone" suggets too much activity and energy. It's like I'm asleep. If it had a breast I'd nurse it without thinking.

Second Voice ***1/2
Neo-classical dron-esque minimalism, ritual, dark, very krispinese

Shark Bait ***
Gotta have that experimentation, or shit gets stale. I look for people involved with this project to go on to better things in the future, if there is in fact to be a 'future'.

She Wants Revenge ***1/2
gettin' there, folks, keep it up. I ain't buying your albums or anything but, seriously,m though, keep it up. gettin' there.

She SIlenced Seraphim ***
Emo Skinny Puppy with movie-style keyboards.

Sigillum S ***
Good and crazy. Crazy candy.

Nomo Oggo ****1/2
MMMMM. They'll get a fifth star the day they realize that it isn't 100% "art" to have bad recording levels on your CDs. The thing is -I'll actually play the speaker-destroying track anyway - because it's just that good.

Pete Namlook ***1/2
drone, dark, mental - reminds me of M Magnon (Nocturnal Emissions) in that he seems to be trying to come off as this kind of new ager or cosmic Consciousness guy or something, but all his work sounds like insanity and scariness. Him and mom had some issues, and it's my hope that those issues will develop over time to turn that ignominious "1/2" into that crucial fourth star. PETE: you don't have to be defeated by your emotions in order to exploit their intensity in your work, feller. If you don't bleed out some serious shit before you get too old, you'll never be able to do it at all. I want you to use this time right now to be as much of a ridiculous teen-age style dick as you can so that your work will resonate with that essential tradition of shame which drives all truly great artists.

Will ***
The stable/safe side of Coil-oriented sequenced-synth brooding.

I'm probably going to keep doing this. I may move the venue, though.
